Access congratulates Terri Chandler, RDH, of Las Vegas, Nev., on her recognition by VEGAS INC in its selection of “Health Care Headliners 2012.” The VEGAS INC Health Care Headliners Award was presented by a business magazine under Greenspun Media. Chandler is the founder/executive director of Future Smiles, a non-profit school-based oral health program that addresses unmet health needs of at-risk children. Their services are provided at local schools and include preventive oral health care screenings, education, dental cleaning, protective sealants and fluoride varnish. The program’s success stems from a unique delivery system that starts the early stages of preventive oral health learning with intent to decrease the incidence of oral disease.
“It was very special to be recognized by the business community,” Chandler said. “As a public health dental hygienist, the recognition by VEGAS INC as a Health Care Headliner is quite an honor for me. The fact that VEGAS INC included me in its selection of dental professionals signals that our constant efforts to deliver excellent school-based oral health care to underserved children has been noticed and appreciated by the community at large. It is deeply gratifying to be recognized in this way, and more importantly, it brings recognition to the wonderful Future Smiles team of public health dental hygienists who invest their passion and professional talents to improve the health and well-being of needy children. This is a very special moment for us all!”
Future Smiles, which began in 2009, has earned recognition from Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval and support from Senator Harry Reid’s office. Because of strategic partnerships with organizations such as the Clark County School District, United Way of Southern Nevada, the City of Las Vegas, the Public Education Foundation and Compliance Alliance, Future Smiles has improved the lives of more than 3,500 at-risk kids.
According to the website, “Future Smiles provides vital oral health care to vulnerable children, decreasing the incidence of oral disease, thus instilling positive oral health behavior for a lifetime. We are deeply committed to the health of the children and families that we serve and are proud to provide oral health care to more than 200 children a month in Southern Nevada. You can find our Future Smiles’ team members at local schools, Family Enrichment Resource Centers (FERCs), health fairs and other community events.”

Third Annual Caryn Solie RDH Scholarship Winners By Wendy St. Cyr, RDHBS, President, Northern Nevada Sigma Phi Alpha
Bailey Brady, 2012 recipient of the Caryn Solie RDH scholarship, dreamed of becoming a dental professional in her youth. A native Nevadan, she attended the University of Nevada Reno (UNR) after high school, and then enrolled in the Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) dental hygiene program in the fall of 2010.
“As a lifelong Nevada resident, I have seen the need for families and fellow students to know the importance of nutrition and oral health,” Brady said. She plans to continue studying dental hygiene and nutrition dietetics at UNR. As a youth, she aspired to be a dental professional. A dental hygiene career, she explained, allows her to work in the medical field and improve the oral health of any individual.
Brady intends to utilize her knowledge, skills, experience and compassion to promote good oral health and nutrition to Nevadans through local clinics and community outreach programs. “There are minorities, disabled, homeless and unemployed individuals in Nevada that need assistance. The state of Nevada, UNR and TMCC have provided me with an excellent education, and so I desire to give back to them.”
Bruna T. Lannes, 2012 recipient of the Caryn Solie RDH scholarship, believes that the profession of dental hygiene is the opportunity to get involved with the community, make a positive impact, and make a difference for the state of Nevada. She views working in dental hygiene as the chance to provide care, compassion, health and education to those in need. Ultimately, it is the ability to provide a smile when a smile is needed. Her professional interests include working with children and the special needs population. She is particularly interested in working with those who have developmental disabilities such as autism and Down syndrome. Often, these individuals need guidance and explanations in the dental setting, and this can present a challenge for the busy dental hygienist and dentist. Lannes believes that these populations are underserved and require special attention that can be provided with patience and understanding. “With the young patient, a first visit is essential, and it is extremely critical that it be a positive one,” she said.
Lannes was the 2011 SADHA treasurer of her junior dental hygiene class and is currently the 2012 senior vice president. She was a student delegate at the ADHA House of Delegates meeting in 2011. She has participated in various community service activities and enjoys giving back to her community. Her goals and aspirations include continuing her education, gaining experience and becoming an Advanced Dental Hygiene Practitioner in the future to provide care to the underserved population in Nevada.
The Sigma Phi Alpha Delta Tau Caryn Solie RDH Scholarship was created in honor of 2010-2011 ADHA President Caryn Solie, RDH, as a tribute to her consistent and extensive dedication to the profession of dental hygiene. Solie, a past president of Northern Nevada Dental Hygienists’ Association, also served as ADHA District XII Trustee from 2002 to 2006, in which capacity she served as a board advisor to the Council on Education and Public Health, the Committee on Administration and the HY-Pac Committee. She was appointed to the ADHA’s executive director search committee in 2004. Her experience has provided her with many opportunities to meet with other dental hygienists, lobbyists, dentists, legislators and governors. She has facilitated strategic planning sessions with all of the District XII constituents and served as member of the ADHA Council on Policy and Bylaws. Solie is a recipient of the prestigious 2008 Discus Dental/ADHA Distinguished Service Award. She resides in Sparks, Nev.
