North River Boats Manufactures Safe, Comfortable Crew Transfer Boats

North River Boats, based in Roseburg Oregon, now builds 16-meter Crew Transfer vessels. The first of these vessels is set to deliver before the end of the year. Designed for exposed waters by Boksa Marine Design, the 52 x 16-foot Crew Transfer vessel is designed to accommodate 24 passengers, 3-tons of cargo or a combination of the two.

The Crew Transfer will be powered with twin CAT C-12 marine diesel engines at 750-horsepower (each) with Hamilton 364 jets. This will provide an estimated cruising speed of approximately 27 knots with a maximum speed of almost 34 knots. The 450 gallon diesel fuel tank will provide for more than a 200 NM range. Designed for redundancy, the boat is equipped with dual Phasor 15kw marine generators.

When North River Boats started working on this project, there were several special requests from the customer. Their main concern was that the boat will be operated in an area that has a lot of civil unrest and potential piracy threats. The safety of their crew was our top priority. North River met this challenge by designing a complete operator enclosure that can be fully isolated from the rest of the boat. This enclosure is lockable and has protective windows to prevent persons from forcibly entering the operator enclosure. An intruder could break the glass, but could not gain access to this area.

A complete electronics suite installed in the vessel, includes Simrad NSS12 EVO2 12.1-inch Touch Multifunction display with 4G Broadband Radar, Structure Scan Sonar and a Furuno FA150 AIS. Simrad RS90 VHF/AIS radios with multiple handset locations provide VHF at the helm and upper control station.

For crew safety briefings, a wall mounted TV with complete intercom system has been incorporated. This provides the ability for the customer to broadcast safety announcements in multiple languages.

Separate from the main mission as a crew/cargo transport vessel, the boat will have North River’s custom pilot transfer system installed on the cabin roof. Boarding ships from the roof top has been a standard practice for all North River Pilot boats since 2002. The pilots like boarding from the roof as it puts them closer to the top of the ladder allowing for a shorter climb to the ship. Safety is one of North River’s top concerns and this system works well for our users. There is also a crow’s nest at the bow for boarding forward of the operator. The 18-inch diameter Gilman foam fenders protect the boat from contact with ships and other vessels. These are easily removed and replaced individually.

The upper station will allow for the operator to control the boat while loading pallets of stores onto the reinforced aft deck. A full galley is supplied for crew comfort and includes a refrigerator, microwave and coffee station. An enclosed head with sink is located forward in the cuddy as well as an area for stowing crew luggage.
