2012 ADHA Awards Presented at CLL at the 89th Annual Session A DHA sponsors and cosponsors a variety of awards programs to recognize outstanding achievements in specific areas of dental hygiene. While awards are presented on an annual basis, with the winners recognized at annual session, it is often the case that the achievements honored represent efforts that reach beyond the previous year to involve the span of an entire dental hygiene career. At this year’s Center for Lifelong Learning in Phoenix, Ariz., ADHA awards were presented to the following individuals, institutions, and programs. Fones Award This award recognizes a current ADHA member who has contributed significantly to the profession of dental hygiene over the past 25+ years. This year’s winner is Laura J. Webb, CDA, RDH, MS , Fallon, Nev. Colgate/ADHA Community Outreach Award This award recognizes components or constituents who have implemented significant community outreach programs focusing on preventive oral health care. This year’s winner is Northwest Wisconsin Dental Hygienists’ Association ADHA Award for Excellence sponsored by Johnson & Johnson With this award, ADHA and Johnson & Johnson recognize individual dental hygienists who have made “outstanding accomplishments that have made a significant impact on the practice and future of the dental hygiene profession.” The recipients have at least 10 years of membership in ADHA and its constituents, demonstrate an active involvement in the association, and were nominated by a colleague for their outstanding accomplishments. This year’s winners are Julie Ann Janssen, RDH, MA , Springfield, Ill. Katie L. Dawson, RDH, RDHAP, BS , Oakland, Calif. Kristen Simmons, RDH, BSDH, MHA , Hillsboro, Ore. Mary Pat Burgess, RDH, MBA , Chicago, Ill. Linda Gerwatowski, RDH, MS , Colorado Springs, Colo. Crest-Oral B/ADHA Award for Clinical Dental Hygienists This award celebrates the important contributions dental hygienists make in the lives of their patients by recognizing the importance of patient/client education in promoting the critical role of oral health to total health. This year’s winner is Christina Emmert, RDH , Rockford, Ill. Hu-Friedy/ADHA Master Clinician Award This award celebrates a clinical hygienist who demonstrates outstanding clinical expertise in relating the interdependence of clinical practice and patient education for the improvement of patient compliance. This year’s winner is Nancy L. Kiehl, RDH, BSDH, MSEd , Wakeman, Ohio. ADHA/Esther Wilkins Future Leader Award Sponsored by Hu-Friedy, this award was created to recognize dental hygienists who exhibit a strong commitment to the dental hygiene profession and have demonstrated leadership in ADHA within five years of graduation from an accredited dental hygiene program. This year’s winner is Heather Beavers, RDH, BAS , Lansing, Mich. Irene Newman Award Sponsored by Colgate, this award recognizes outstanding achievement in advancing the art and science of dental hygiene. This year’s winner is Ann Eshenauer Spolarich, RDH, PhD , Cave Creek, Ariz. ADHA/Procter & Gamble Dental Hygiene Educator of the Year Award This award recognizes excellence in teaching, mentoring and devotion to student achievement. This year’s winner is Wendy Kerschbaum, RDH, MA, MPH , Ann Arbor, Mich. Student Community Service Award ADHA/Sigma Phi Alpha/Johnson & Johnson Journalism Award This award is intended to honor two students, one at the baccalaureate level and one at the master’s/doctoral level who have written a review or original research paper that contributes to the dental hygiene body of knowledge and is of the quality to be published in the Journal of Dental Hygiene . This year’s winners are Laura González, BS, BSDH , Durhan, N.C. Cynthia Ann Lambert, CDA, RDH, MS , Franklinville, N.C. Sponsored by Colgate, this award recognizes an outstanding student chapter of ADHA that has made a significant contribution to the community.
