Deslauriers Inc., Forming Round Concrete Columns with PCF-Plastic Column Forms

Deslauriers has been in the concrete forming industry since 1888. Twenty-five years ago the reusable PCF-plastic round column form was introduced. Since its introduction, tens of thousands of concrete columns have been poured on jobsites and in precast yards across North America and around the world.

The patented lightweight design makes it easy to handle, set and strip with only one person, no crane needed. Standard pipe braces and/or turn buckles can be used to plumb the column form. The forms bolt together and are stackable, creating a smooth spiral free finish. The plastic is also waterproof and will not rust.

One question that comes up when talking about PCF-plastic column forms is, How many reuses will you get from each form? For example A & R Concrete Products, New Windsor, New York formed 3,100 precast light pole bases, using just 30, 24 inch diameter Deslauriers plastic column forms. The answer is dependent on how you take care of the forms and the how they are used.

Deslauriers plastic column forms are available in the following sizes: 12 inch, 16 inch, 18 inch, 20 inch and 24 inch are all 96 inches tall and come with a cutting flange at 48 inches. The flange at 48 inches makes it possible to cut the forms to make a shorter pour and then bolt the forms back together to get back to the 96 inches height. The 30 inch form is 48 inches tall with a cutting flange at 24 inches.

In addition to the plastic column forms, Deslauriers is one of the largest manufacturers of steel round column forms. Steel columns forms are available in standard dimensions from 14 inches to 60 inches in diameter and in heights of 1 foot, 2 feet, 4 feet and 8 feet. Larger diameters are available per request. Steel forms are available for rental and sale.

Deslauriers also offers full in-house engineering, design and fabrication services for your custom form needs. We have more than 100 years in the custom form manufacturing business.

All of our custom forms are built in our facility to the exact standards that you have come to know and trust from our round column forms. What this means to you is less labor and a better end product. It also means that the forms will work the first time. No rework required.

Deslauriers also manufactures a number of accessories to complement our column forms such as scaffold brackets, pipe brace connectors and bull-nose adapters to connect popular European and American forms to our forms.

Visit Deslauriers at Booth #N1159 in the North building to see the forms up close and personal. More information on our concrete and masonry testing, forming, safety and precast products are also available by visiting one of our dealers, our website at www.deslinc.com or by calling 800-743-4106.

Grove Product’s Snap Apart Wedge Shims

Constructed of rugged, injection-molded high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) proven to withstand up to 12,500 pounds of compressive force, the solid (never hollow) shims hold up in a wide variety of applications including masonry, precast and tilt-up concrete. According to Simon Braune, Vice President, Grove Products, this shim was created because a distributor could not get timely delivery, consistent quality, and firm pricing from their overseas supplier. This product attempts to fill this void as it works the same as Grove Product’s small wedge except that it is tapered in the middle so it can snap apart and serve as two wedges. It can therefore serve as either one wedge or two, depending on the customer’s needs.

A fraction of the cost of corrodible metal shims, the wedge shims will not rot, mildew, stain or deteriorate like wood. They can be embedded right into the joint without jeopardizing the integrity of the compound, saving the time end expensive of having to remove them once they are in place. Guaranteed thickness and color-coding eliminates the guesswork during installation. The product comes in white, though alternative colors are available at an additional cost. Consistent shim dimensions also ensure they can be precisely stacked for customfitting irregular joint variances. Plus, the slotted design easily slips over the top of bolts, making placement faster and easier.

Grove Tapered Wedge Shims are easy to use for levelling and aligning dead loads. Designed for easy insertion where installation is required, especially where the object being shimmed is installed first and then shimmed. Both Ushaped wedges are sized to fit around a ½-inch bolt or anchor point and packaged 1,000 to a case. The shims also are available in a non-combustible form, created in response to requests from customers who needed a replacement for costly metal shims used to meet fireproof specifications. Wedge shims are used anywhere wood is inappropriate and a gap needs filling. Following are common uses for the wedge shims:

• In the glass industry: Shim to align frames in three dimensions for proper spacing and optical flatness. Flat plate shims may be used temporarily to cushion edges of glass on hard surfaces and protect from damage.
• In masonry industry: Shims can be used to establish both temporary and permanent joint spacing for stone masonry. For stone panel cladding, shim panels to align both vertically and horizontally. Shims are also used to relieve stress while mortar sets. For terra cotta, brittle materials can be temporarily cushioned with shims to prevent damage before being fixed or sealed into place.
• In restoration: For both commercial and residential, designs often require shims to restore level and structural soundness to a variety of different aspects of the building. Grove Shims are particularly useful for re-levelling floors, foundations, and concrete bearing surfaces.

About Grove Products
Grove Products is the leading producer of plastic structural shims. Proudly made in the USA since 1962, the family-owned business provides prompt, personalized attention to each order. In addition to their large line of in-stock shims, they custom fabricate parts to meet unique requirements. FIBERMESH by Propex

Article Courtesy of Propex

We are the fiber experts. More than a quarter century ago, we created the category of synthetic fibers for reinforced concrete, with FIBERMESH fibers. TRUE FIBERMESH set the standard for performance value and reliability – and still does today. We offer a complete line of fiber solutions – FIBERMESH and FIBERCAST micro synthetic fibers, ENDURO macro synthetic fibers, NOVOMESH blended fibers and NOVOCON steel fibers – each of which reinforce concrete and build a stronger industry. FIBERMESH by Propex offers a full range of products to bring the right fiber for the application, every time.

As a worldwide leader in fiber reinforcement solutions, our fibers ensure performance, increase value and reduce risk, which provides value, reliability and concrete performance, and ultimately enhances your reputation.

Expressly formulated to address early age cracking, FIBERMESH and FIBERCAST micro synthetic fibers prevent 80- 100 percent of cracks in the plastic state – precisely when most cracks occur. Microfibers suspend the larger aggregate, which, in turn, reduces bleed water migrating to the surface. By reducing the bleed water by holding water within the concrete matrix, micro fibers ultimately slow down the hydration process, which remains favorable, especially for surface durability.

Representing a quantum technological leap in fiber technology, our ENDURO and FIBERMESH high performance macro synthetic fibers are made from a specially engineered alloy polymer that offers long-term performance of steel fibers at a lower dosage rate. The patented technology and unique design of each fiber serves to anchor it firmly within the concrete for long-term performance and increased durability.

Engineered for long-term performance in demanding industrial applications, the NOVOCON line of steel concrete fibers is specifically designed to enhance concrete in its hardened state. The uniform distribution of steel fibers throughout the concrete mix transforms concrete into a more ductile composite material that in creases the energy absorption capability of the slab. Additionally, it provides superior crack control and maximum load stability at the floor joints, where it is most needed.

Our concrete fiber blends are a combination of micro synthetic fibers and either macro synthetic fibers or steel fibers. The resulting NOVOMESH family of products represents the best possible solution to concrete’s intrinsic flaws throughout its life span for temperature shrinkage and flexural reinforcement.

Innovative Oil Delivery and Waste Oil Pick-Up Keeps Restaurant Technologies Cooking

When it comes to synchronicity, Restaurant Technologies has it down to a science. When a Kenworth T370 pulls into a restaurant, it can replenish the establishment’s cooking oil tank with fresh oil, while at the same time drawing out used oil from the restaurant’s storage tank.

“We are the only ones that can do that on a national basis,” said Becky Mueller, Restaurant Technologies national fleet manager. “We have a fleet of nearly 200 medium-duty trucks, domiciled at 41 depots across the country that can service foodservice locations in this fashion. Our patented design with multiple tanks gives us a unique delivery advantage, which also includes simultaneous waste oil removal all in one unit.”

Restaurant Technologies works with many of the national big boys—McDonald’s, KFC, Burger King—as well as many other regional and independent restaurant groups. In all, it services more than 21,000 foodservice locations. It employs a telemetry system—a “black box”—at customer locations, which monitors the customers’ fresh oil supply. When inventories drop to a certain level, replenishments are automatically sent in one of the customized delivery trucks.

While “oil management” is an ongoing service for these companies, Restaurant Technologies also supplies all the oil management equipment and storage tanks, as well as a web-based customer portal that sends automated alerts to customers when standard operating procedures are not in compliance. It also provides ongoing training and equipment maintenance, which makes Restaurant Technologies a truly turnkey company.

“In a low-margin industry, we have a competitive advantage of not only saving our customers money in the delivery and pickup of oil, but in providing quality in everything we do,” said Mueller. “It’s why we have a 98 percent retention rate with our customers.”

In 2013, the company began replacing its fleet with Kenworth T370s in single and tandem-axle configurations. There are 30 currently in service with more on order. The trucks were purchased through Rihm Kenworth.

The tandems are spec’d with PACCAR PX-9 engines, rated at 350-horsepower and driven through Allison automatic transmissions. The single axle T370s are powered by the PACCAR PX- 7 engine rated at 300-horsepower and also driven through Allison automatics.

Since the Kenworth T370s leave fully loaded with oil—six fresh tanks hold up to 20,000 pounds of oil in the tandem axles, and 12,000 pounds of oil in the three fresh tanks on the single axles— saving weight was a consideration in the specs.

Mueller said on any given week, up to 800 routes will be driven, each with 10 to 14 customer stops.
