FlexPro 50: Flexibility by Design

Introducing Groninger’s Modular Turnkey Machine Concept for the Aseptic Filling and Closing of Containers in Small Batches

Groninger & Co. GmbH recently introduced the FlexPro 50, a modular filling and closing system designed to process nested, as well as bulk, syringes, vials and cartridges. The FlexPro 50 is configurable in any number of layouts, including either isolator or RABs. This modular flexibility offers scalable processing solutions for our customers at reduced cost and shortened delivery times. The FlexPro50 concept is now meeting market requirements for small batch, multiproduct/multiobject filling lines. A recent project with Bryllan LLC required an isolated line to process live virus, hormone, cytotoxic and sterile products in a new filling suite. According to Scott Ferguson, a business development manager at groninger USA, the FlexPro 50’s design was easily configurable to meet Bryllan’s needs and targeted delivery time.

Dr. Douglas Bryans, chief operating officer of Bryllan LLC states that he chose the groninger FlexPro 50 for the company’s new multiproduct facility because the FlexPro system offered a flexible and configurable operating platform that provided significant advantages in a multiproduct sterile filling operation. The design integrated pressure control to ensure enhanced sterility assurance and product containment, as well as operating parameters to meet cGMP guidelines for cross-contamination control. In addition, Bryans found that easy transition between different unit types offered great flexibility and capacity utilization without significant capital investment.

“Groninger is a great partner providing excellent technical and operating expertise in their design solutions for the FlexPro system,” said Bryans. “Their innovative approach to solving process problems and commitment to quality builds confidence in our partnership.”

SafeBridge Consultants, Inc. — Providing Services to the Pharmaceutical Industry for Product Safety and Worker Protection

Since its inception in 1997, SafeBridge Consultants has been the premier resource for high-level safety, health, risk assessment and environmental support for the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and fine chemical industries. It was founded on the principle of the “potent compound safety triangle” which brings together the disciplines of toxicology, industrial hygiene and analytical chemistry to recognize, evaluate, measure and control exposures to potent active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). These activities are essential for the implementation of a robust product stewardship program to speed drugs to market.

The control and containment of potent APIs is required to prevent crosscontamination from product to product for patient safety and to minimize worker exposure to these substances. Although the drug products may be beneficial to patients requiring specific therapies, if for example there were inadequate controls for a batch of a drug for hypertension resulting in cross-contamination of another API for pain, it could potentially result in the hypertensive patient ingesting pain medication they do not need or cannot tolerate. Similarly, workers handling these products in the manufacturing environment may potentially be exposed to airborne concentrations of APIs that may cause pharmacological effects in the workers. The potent compound safety triangle of services provided by SafeBridge provides drug innovators, generic companies, vendors, and contract research and manufacturing organizations with the resources to use a systematic and scientifically supportable approach to making safe medicines.

SafeBridge’s toxicologists are responsible for hazard and risk assessments of APIs, excipients, extractables and leachables, impurities, contaminants or other chemical substances that may be in the work environment or contaminating drug products. These evaluations are delivered in the form of permitted daily or acceptable daily exposures (PDEs/ADEs) for product safety or occupational exposure limits (OELs), occupational exposure bands or health categories (OEBs/OHCs), or acceptable surface limits (ASLs) for worker protection. For impurities and other chemical contaminants, SafeBridge has licenses for two computational toxicology programs to predict the potential for the chemical to have mutagenic activity (ICH M7).

Other parts of the potent compound safety triangle of services include our industrial hygiene analytical laboratory and industrial hygiene staff. Our laboratory is accredited by the American Industrial Hygiene Association – Laboratory Accreditation Program (AIHA-LAP) and provides method development and sample analysis for pharmaceuticals for air and surface samples. Our industrial hy-giene staff performs workplace exposure assessments (both qualitative and quantitative) and provides practical solutions for the control and containment of pharmaceutical and chemical processes.

SafeBridge is composed of boardcertified health and safety professionals with years of experience with a focus on chemical, pharmaceutical and laboratory workplaces. SafeBridge has provided its services to over 700 business entities across North America and Europe and in specific countries in Asia and South America. SafeBridge maintains offices in Mountain View, California; New York City; Easton, Pennsylvania; and Liverpool, England. SafeBridge merged with Trinity Consultants in 2012.

Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Facilities Choose SteraMist, Powered by Binary Ionization Technology, to Remain Compliant with Industry and Government Regulations for a Controlled Environment

Sustaining environmental control and reducing microbiological contamination in a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility requires following a strict standard operating procedure (SOP) and numerous Certificates of Analysis (CoA) for quality assurance. Specifically, the cleaning/ disinfection SOP must meet a facility’s need for regular and frequent disinfection/decontamination that adheres to both internal, industry and federal guidelines. TOMI Environmental Solutions, Inc. partners with every pharmaceutical client to provide guidance in developing highly effective disinfection/decontamination protocols, as well as direction throughout the entire equipment qualification and validation process.

The cost to get a new drug to market can be well over $1 billion. As a result, a contamination issue is devastating and expensive to the entire process. Sources for pollution are abundant in drug manufacturing and include human error, air contaminates, equipment and raw materials. Due to moisture from water intrusion and/or cleaning processes, mold spores can become common in certain of these processes.

Ensuring all surfaces remain fully disinfected and decontaminated is fundamental for the highest level of quality control. Whether utilized for ante-areas, cleanrooms, or direct on equipment and electronics for materials transfer, SteraMist powered by Binary Ionization Technology (BIT) meets the disinfection/ decontamination requirements for all pharmaceutical manufacturing areas; from communal rooms to the most stringently guarded areas. It’s the unique science behind the technology that makes this system so versatile and effective.

SteraMist BIT is featured at INTERPHEX Exhibit Booth #3835. Join our Technical Theatre on April 27 at 3-3:30 p.m. on Stage 6, Booth #1677.

H2O2 Converted by Plasma Science

SteraMist BIT’s patented Activated Ionized Hydrogen Peroxide (AIHP) technology disinfects high touch, hard-to-reach nonporous surfaces without contaminating the environment with any toxic byproducts or, corroding or oxidizing materials/equipment. After disinfection/ decontamination, the environment is left only with oxygen and water (humidity). This makes it an ideal solution for reducing cross contamination between treated surfaces during the production, purification and packaging of pharmaceuticals.

An effective broad-spectrum surface disinfectant, SteraMist BIT is:

• Easily incorporated into current cleaning procedures.

• Easy to transport and can be configured to treat multiple spaces simultaneously.

• Economical, and easy to apply.

• Bleach and chlorine-free.

• Formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, titanium dioxide and peracetic acid-free disinfecting formula.

• Silver-ion-free formula, leaves no residues.

• Great for frequent, daily use.

• A multipurpose, multiroom, multisurface daily disinfectant.

SteraMist BIT Is Fully Validated to Comply With Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) Standards

Need support making sure your facility is compliant with good manufacturing practices? Or want an expert’s opinion a work through the equipment validation process? TOMI’s pharmaceutical experts can assist you through every step, from design qualification (DQ) and installation qualification (IQ) to operational qualification (OQ), performance qualification (PQ) and maintenance qualification (MQ).
