LOOK MA-MORE HOLES AND NO DUST! This year, in addition to incremental improvements and designs specifically for use with cordless tools, drill bit manufacturers are concentrating on engineering drill bits that work in conjunction with dust collection systems. These eight manufacturers all deserve a fresh look. CHAMPION CUTTING TOOL “2017 was an exciting year for Champion Cutting Tool as we continued to innovate and grow,” says marketing manager Allison Frey. “Our strongest focus was on the launch of our Brute Platinum XLT Tapper. This power tapper is designed to increase productivity when threading large amounts of holes in ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The XLT is the perfect complement to our Brute Platinum XL22 Spiral Point Taps and BruteLube Fluid. When used together as a system, operators will tap 10 times faster than traditional hand tapping with a tap wrench.” High-tech features such as controlled speeds, autoreverse and a pivoting tap collet reduce tap misalignment — the number one cause of tap breakage. Frey notes that the XLT has already had great success increasing productivity in a variety of industries including architectural metal and glass, steel fabrication, MRO and more. Champion is also focused on its Proline brand, which includes concrete tools like hammer bits and chisels. Concrete structures are often reinforced with rebar to carry tensile loads, which complicates hole drilling for conduit and anchoring. If operators hit rebar while drilling, they will not be able to penetrate it with just a standard carbide hammer bit. “This year, Champion re-engineered our CM79 rebar cutters to cut faster and last longer,” Frey says. “The rebar cutters feature special carbide tooth geometry specifically for drilling metal. Longer flutes and a relief hole for slug removal expedite debris extraction. They are available in SDS-Plus or Straight Shank.” BOSCH “In the market for drill bits and accessories in multi-materials, wood and concrete, users are looking for performance and maximum versatility,” begins Chris Moskaites, product manager, Robert Bosch Tool. “For example, multi-material bits have become a requirement on the job site thanks to their ability to drill into many materials, as well as accommodating various power tools. Multi-material bits can drill into brick, block, tile, fiber cement board, wood, plastic and metal. And they can be used with rotary drills, hammer drills and impact drivers.” In the market for wood drilling, increased runtime in cordless power tools is sought after by every tool user. So a drill bit that improves battery runtime stands out. “Bosch Daredevil High-Speed Auger Bits are the power tool industry’s first to be engineered to work with cordless drills in high-speed mode,” Moskaites says. “And thanks to an optimized design that features decreased-pitch tips, these bits provide up to two times more holes per battery charge.” And then there’s the market for concrete drilling where products that help meet OSHA compliance guidelines for reducing respirable silica dust are important. Bosch Speed Clean bits are part of a comprehensive system that reduces dust while producing precise, clean holes quickly with drilling time reduced by up to 25 percent and anchor installation reduced by up to 50 percent. Because the bit minimizes dust in the environment, there are benefits to both workers and people located in the immediate area around the construction site. The bits work in conjunction with an attached vacuum system. “In the world of drill bits and power tool accessories, it all comes back to performance. And that performance now includes saving time and providing an added layer of safety,” Moskaites concludes. Milwaukee Tool has made several advancements in optimizing drill bit geometries. Most recently, Next Generation SDS-Max drill bits have been designed with breaker points that pulverize material more efficiently, while variable flutes that widen near the tip of the bit help to remove debris faster – allowing users to make up to 15 percent more holes per charge.
