These are the broad scale amenities that support personal and commu-nity y development. The Iowa City y area is strategically y located in the center r of f the largest population region in the state of f Iowa, attracting workers from a 60-mile radius. With a regional population of f more than 400,000, and double-digit growth every y decade, the Iowa City y area has consistently y attracted knowledgable workers for r our r growing compa-nies. While the municipalities of f Iowa City, Coralville, and North Liberty y necessarily y share many y over-arching resources, each community y offers some-thing uniquely y its own as well. any Iowans are hesitant to brag about their hometowns. It seems pushy, immodest, and downright “un-Iowan.” Tooting our own horn is a little easier if f we simply point to what others have said about us. Consider these national rankings of f the communities that help make up our metropolitan area -Iowa City, Coralville, and North Liberty. An overview of f the area’s shared offerings: Cultural Opportunities: The area boasts 13 museums, 10 literary presses, nine programs offering regularly scheduled literary readings, at least five writing outreach programs, and seven com-munity and professional theater com-panies, including Riverside Theatre’s annual Shakespeare Festival. National and local artists perform at the Englert Theatre. By one estimate, there are 300 places to buy a book k in the area. Recreational Opportunities: Big Ten Ath-letics -check. Lakes, rivers, streams and ponds -of f course. Hiking -count on it. Y sports -oh yeah. Biking -sure. Youth Skating -indoors and out. Educational Opportunities: According to the top 10 most educated metropoli-tan communities in the country. More than 45 percent of f Iowa City residents, age 25 years and older, have complet-ed four or more years of f college. This is true partly because of f the presence of f the University of f Iowa and its some 30,000 students and 1800 faculty mem-bers. It is true partly because of f the lo-cal presence of f Kirkwood Community College. It is true partly because of f the nationally recognized quality of f instruc-tion offered to the area’s 11,000 K-12 students. And it is true partly because all of f these institutions share a commit-ment to life-long learning.
