“ Three of my patients became dental hygienists, as did my niece. And at a recent MVDHA meeting and DHASNY Annual Session, many hygienists told me how I mentored or encouraged them in their profession and our professional association.” eidi Philley, RDH , of Clinton, New York, received Heidi Philley, RDH the Dental Hygien-ists’ Association of the State of New York (DHASNY) Mentor of the Year Award during the association’s 91st Empire Confer-ence in November 2011. The event took place at Honor’s Haven Resort, Spa and Conference Center in Ellenville, N.Y. Philley earned an associate’s degree in applied sciences from Erie County Community College in Buffalo, New York in 1964. Her career has taken her to Australia, Germany, South Africa, the Andes Mountains in Peru, and to El Salvador, where she worked to establish a À uoride varnish program. At home in New York, in addition to clinical prac-tice, Philley has held many volunteer commitments including with the Oneida County Health Department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention State Oral Health Plans as well as with her compo-nent and constituent dental hygiene associations. Philley’s mentoring efforts are ongoing. She was recently discussing a mentoring project with her col-league Vicky Guerra, RDH. “Vicky reminded me how I mentored her when she moved to New York from New Hampshire many years ago. I helped her ¿ nd a job and encouraged her in her career,” Philley said. “That year, I took her to her Mohawk Valley Dental Hygienists’ Association (MVDHA) meetings and later to the DHASNY Annual Session. She (and I) then took on numerous leadership roles in MVDHA and DHASNY. Mentoring became a stable friendship and source of encouragement that enriched both of our lives and remains something we enjoy to this day.” As for the recent mentoring project, last year, a young woman requested Philley’s mentorship and asked her to share a number of different areas of dental hygiene that have been a part of her 40-plus year career. “I took on the position as part of a course that she was taking toward her bachelor’s degree,” Philley said. “In turn, I was made aware of new aspects of dental hygiene education. A report needed to be turned in at the end of her semester, and that was wonderful way to see what we shared during our time together. It was a growth experi-ence for both of us, resulting in a friendship.” Philley noted that successful mentoring relationships involve good conversations and exchanges of ideas that keep both individuals energized. This, she said, is carried over into their careers. Asked to recall the mentors who inspired her to place high value on mentorship, Philley recalled, “In the 1960s, I returned to Central New York after working as a dental hygienist overseas, and I started H going to the MVDHA meetings.” It was through her involvement at the component level that she met and was mentored by two dental hygienists she remembers as “wonderful.” “It was a part of their life and career to mentor, and this became something I did throughout my career,” she said. “Three of my patients became dental hygienists, as did my niece. And at a recent MVDHA meeting and DHASNY Annual Session, many hygienists told me how I mentored or encouraged them in their profession and our professional association.” DHASNY’s Mentor of the Year Award means a great deal to Philley. “What an honor to hear this while I am still involved in my profes-sion, much less while I am alive!” she said. “It was especially nice to receive this honor by way of my component and through my constituent. Both have been a big part of my success in my career as a dental hygienist. “I thank God and the people around me for a wonderful life and a great career.” This edition of Member News was prepared by Jean Majeski. ■ The One Day Canker Sore Patch The mucoadhesive patch covers the canker sore forming a protective gel-like bandage. • Eliminates most Canker Sores in just one day * • Immediate pain relief • Shields from irritants • Eat/Drink pain-free for up to 12 hours * (J.
